Keep Going Even When Times Are Hard
Gerrie Bosch

There are mornings when you wake up and the weight of everything feels heavier than a fully loaded tri-axle. The phone isn't ringing. The bank account isn't growing. Fuel prices are up again. A deal fell through. Someone who owes you money has gone quiet.
If you're in the trucking business — or any business — you know exactly what I'm talking about.
I want to talk to you about those moments. Not with empty words. But honestly, from someone who's been in this industry for over 30 years and has seen every kind of hard time there is.
The Road Isn't Always Smooth — That's the Point
When you drive a truck, you don't expect the road to be perfect. You hit potholes. You hit traffic. You hit bad weather. You get a flat at the worst possible time. But you don't abandon the truck on the side of the road and walk home. You fix the problem, get back behind the wheel, and keep moving.
Life — and business — works exactly the same way.
The difficult seasons aren't a sign that you're doing something wrong. They're often a sign that you're doing something real. Building something real always comes with resistance. If it were easy, everyone would do it.
What Hard Times Actually Do
I've watched businesses fall apart during hard times — and I've watched others come out the other side stronger than they ever were before. The difference was never luck. The difference was always what the person decided to do when things got tough.
Hard times strip away the noise. They show you what actually matters. They push you to be smarter, leaner, and more resourceful. They build a kind of resilience in you that good times simply cannot.
Every scar on an old truck tells a story of miles covered. Every difficult year you've survived tells a story of a person who refused to quit.
Practical Things to Do When It Gets Hard
Motivation is important — but so is action. Here's what I've seen work during the tough seasons:
- Cut what you can, protect what matters most. Look at your costs honestly. Not everything is essential. But don't cut the things that will hurt you long-term just to feel better short-term.
- Keep showing up. Even when you don't feel like it. Even when nothing happens. Consistency over time is what builds reputation — and reputation is everything in this industry.
- Talk to someone who's been through it. Pride will keep you isolated. Reaching out to a mentor, a peer, or even a trusted customer can give you perspective you can't find on your own.
- Look for the opportunity in the chaos. Hard times in a market always shake loose opportunities for those who are paying attention. When others pull back, the ones who stay steady gain ground.
- Remember your why. Why did you start? Who are you doing this for? On the hardest days, reconnecting with that reason can be the thing that keeps you moving.
A Word to the Transport & Trucking Community
South African truck owners, operators, and drivers carry this country's economy on their axles — literally. The produce on supermarket shelves, the building materials on construction sites, the fuel at the petrol stations — it all got there because someone like you showed up and drove the road, even when it was hard.
That work matters. You matter. And the business you're fighting to build or keep alive matters too.
Don't let a hard season make you forget a long story of success. Don't let one bad month convince you that the whole journey is over. The road ahead is longer than the stretch you're currently on.
From Us at Boschies CC
We've been in Jet Park for over 30 years. We've seen recessions, fuel crises, load-shedding, and everything in between. We're still here — not because the road was easy, but because we chose to keep going every single time it got hard.
If you're going through a tough time right now, we see you. Keep going. The truck doesn't stop just because the road gets rough.
And if there's anything we can do to help — whether it's finding you the right vehicle at the right price, or just having a straight conversation about what makes sense for your business — we're here. Call Gerrie on 083 276 0810 or pop in at 39 Bisset Street, Jet Park. The kettle's always on.
